A Tribute to KJ

6 Feb 2018

Last month, we were sad to hear the news that one of our oldest members had “Gone Home”.
Ken Johnson (KJ) was never a cub or scout but was very active with 5th Letchworth as an adult. Jeff Robson has penned a tribute to KJ and I gladly publish it here, with Jeff’s permission.

5th show their respects at Remembrance Sunday

20 Nov 2016

Every year, along with all the other uniformed youth organisations in the town, the Scouts show their respects by joining in the Remembrance Sunday parade at the War Memorial in Letchworth town centre. This year we had a fantastic turnout from 5th, and didn’t they look smart!

Was it really 50 years ago?

30 Nov 2013

Did you know that 5th Letchworth is blessed with having its very own archivist? Ken Johnson, KJ to everybody, has been a 5th Letchworth member for most of its current history: i.e. since soon after it was re-formed in 1957.
Throughout that time, KJ has kept a meticulous diary of just about everything that he did: in Scouting and outside. He also has a trove of treasures and memorabilia from his time in Scouting. He is gradually handing over all of his mementoes to the Group and I thought it would …

Parking cars and watching the aeroplanes

5 Jun 2013

Last Sunday, 2nd June, several leaders and parents spent a happy day directing cars at Old Warden Airfield, home of the Shuttleworth Collection. We were there as the guests of The Shuttleworth Foundation, who kindly offered Scout Groups the opportunity to raise funds in return for some light graft.
In attendance were myself, Nick Howell (ASL), Helen Doherty (ASL), Stiofan Doherty (YL), Geoff Smith (ASL), Sam Nobbs (YL), George Lucas (YL), Andrew Kitching (Parent and Exec member) and Simon (Scout). Special thanks go to Sam and George as they were doing …

Rotary Walk 2013 conquered by 5th

20 May 2013

The Rotary Club of Letchworth Garden City runs an annual sponsored walk around Letchworth, following (roughly) the Greenway. The Greenway is a cycle/walking path that encircles Letchworth and more or less follows the boundaries of the Garden City. Each year, 5th Letchworth uses the Rotary Walk as its main fundraising event, and this year was no exception.
I was with the Scouts, so I can only really comment from their perspective but I know that many Cubs and Beavers were walking as well, because I saw them during the morning.
We started …

Group AGM 2013

15 May 2013

Last night we held the Annual General Meeting of the Group’s Executive Committee, more properly known as the AGM of the Group Scout Council. This is the meeting at which the parents have the opportunity to hold the Group Exec to account for what’s gone in in the past year. We generally try and keep the formal part of the meeting as short as possible so that parents can be entertained by the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Last year we managed to get the formal bit done in 17 mins! …
